Abstract
127,522. Cambay, C. A. Sept. 16, 1918, [Convention date]. Pliers; vices.-A double-ended adjustable spanner which may be used as a hand vice or tongs, comprises two symmetrical plates provided at their ends with jaw parts and slidably connected together by the interengagement of convex and concave parts on the plates, these parts being close to the jaws so as to give the greatest suppoit at the parts receiving the greatest strain. The plates are operated by a right and left hand screw and a spring tending to open the jaws is arranged between the plates, and a stop pin is provided to limit the travel of the screw to prevent accidental separation of the plates. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the lines A-B and C-D of Fig. 1, and Figs. 7 and 9 are opposite views, with the nearest plate removed in each case. The spanner comprises two similar plates 1, 2 formed at their ends with jaws 18, 19, 20, 21. The plates are formed adjucent the jaws with concave or undercut parts 25, 25<1>, 24, 24' forming guides for the convex parts 22, 22<1>, 23, 23<1>. The plates are provided with openings 3 to afford access to the actuating thumb piece 4 of a right and left hand screw 5, 6 engaging nuts 7, 8 which are mounted in housings 9, 12 in the plates. The nut 7 is held stationary between projections 10, 11 on the plate 2 and the nut 8 engages at one side against a projection 13 on the plate 1. A spring 15 is arranged between projections 16, 17 on the plates 1, 2 respectively and keeps the projection 13 normally in contact with the nut 8, but when the spanner is employed as tongs the jaws are moved together against the action of the spring 15. To prevent the screw 5 being screwed too far into the nut 7 and thus causing disengagement of the plates 1, 2, a stop pin 26 is inserted into the screw 5. The jaw faces may be provided with grooves to engage the opposite angles of a nut, thus permitting the use of the spanner as a box spanner.
