To all whom t may concern:
Be' it known that I, ArlvrN L. KLECKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented newV and useful Improvements `in Piston- Ring Removers, of which the following Vis a specification.
This invention relates'to a device for removing and replacing piston-rings and the general object of the invention` is 'to provide a simple, economical and effective tool of this type having end portions which may be inserted between the extremities of la pistonring for the purpose of expanding the lsame so that it may be readily removed from the piston-ring groove and over the larger part of the piston.
A further object of the invention is to provide mea'nsfor retaining the` ring in engaging relation with said end portions so as to preventthe ring from slipping out of the grasp of the tool.
Another object of the invention is to provide a latch mechanism in connection with the movable jaws of the extractor so that the initial'separation of the'jaws suitable for insertion within the gap between the ends of the piston-ring may be regulated without pressing the handles. ,v

My device comprises principallyptwo jaw members-10 and 11 which are preferablyA made of flat steel plates having rounded vprojections 12 and 13 provided with apertures which are adapted to aline when said projections are placed in overlapping relation so as to receive a pivot-pin or screw 14 therethrough. The screw 14 is maintained in place by the nut 15. The jaw members 10 and 11 are formed with outwardly curved handle 16 and 17 that may be conveniently grasped in the hand for the purpose of 2perating the jaw members about the pivot.

The opposite' end, or' piston-rin engaging end of the device is formedwith lugs 18` and 19 integral respectively'with the jaw members 10 and `11. These lugs are slightly hook-shaped inV order to prevent the'pistonring fromV slippingV away from the jaws while opposite sides of the pivoted members 10 and 11 by means of rivets or screws 22.
The side members20 Van`d21 comprise a vset associated with each jaw member. The
plate 20 is'provided with a laterally curved end 20 and the platev21 is merely'a straight.,
strip. These plates are reversely arranged on the jaw members and the laterally curved portions20 compensate forthe'overlapping krelation* of the Ajaw members. These side plates project beyond the forwardv end of j the jaw members in spacedrelation, sufiicient to accommodate the full width ofl a pistonring25.'
