The invention seeks to provide, as its principal object, a wrench having a stationary jaw and an adjustable jaw movable toward and away from the stationary jaw so that the wrench may be used for work upon various sized nuts. The operation of the adjustable jaw may be effected by the same hand in which the wrench is held, so that in the event oi the person using the wrench having his other hand engaged, he may effect the necessary adjustment of the jaw by the sae hand with which he holds the wrench.
The invention seeks as a i rther object the provision of a wrench which is simple in construction, durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Although illustrated and described in a specific embodiment, the invention is not to be restricted to such embodiment. The right is reserved to make any changes or alterations suggested by the demands of practice, in so far as such changes or alterations are compatible in spirit with the subjoined claim.
The same numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings, wherein:

iteferring to the drawings, the invention is shown as representing a stationary jaw 1 which is formed integrally with a handle member or element 2 and mounted for move ment toward and away from the jaw 1, there is a jaw 3, the inner edge of this jaw sliding against the flat edge 4 of the handle.
Riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the jaw 8 on opposite sides so that they may straddle the handle, are the plates 5, these plates being formed integrally with web portions (3 which lie against that edge of the handle opposite the edge 4. From the free end of the handle 2 to a specific point in its length, the same is shaped to provide for convenient gripping by the hand but from this specified point to the stationary jaw, one edge of the handleis beveled, as indicated and on this beveled edge there are formed the uniformly spaced transversely disposed teeth 7. it will be observed that the teeth 7 do not extend all the way across the beveled portion or the handle but terminate short of the sides of the handle, leaving a flat smooth longitudinal portion 8 adjacent one side 01" the handle and a similar portion 9 adjacent the opposite side of the handle. The smooth portion 8 lies flush with the top of the teeth 7 and the portion 9 flush with the bottom of said teeth and the webs 6 are so shaped that they eliect sliding en-.

Designed to engage the teeth 7 is a blocl: 10 which is formed with one. beveled edge carrying teeth 11. This block is loosely mounted on a pin 12 which is set in the two webs 6, the two latter being spaced away from each other and carrying the block 10 between them, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The pin 12 is held in place by transversely disposed pins 13 and the block 10 is loosely mounted upon this pin 12. lts beveled iace lying against the beveled "face of the handle with the teeth of the two engaging precludes movement of the jaw 3 with relation to the jaw 1, but the block 10 may be swung laterally to effeet the disengagement of its teeth from the teeth 7 and because of the bevel facing on which the teeth are formed this lateral movement is not required to be very great to disengage the teeth of the two. In order that this swinging or": the block 10 may be easily performed, the block is formed with a thumb-engaging projection 14 on that edge opposite the edge carrying the teeth 11 but this lateral movement is effected against the pressure of a spring 15 which is mounted upon one of the plates 5 and bears against the block 10 on one side, thus tending to keep the teeth of the block in engagement with the teeth of the handle.
/Vhen side pressure is applied on the projection 14 in the direction necessary to swing the beveled edge oi the block away from the beveled edge of the handle, the teeth of the block and the handle are disengaged and the movable jaw thereupon being moved longitudinally along the handle to effect its proper spacing with relation to the stationary jaw 1, whereupon the release of the pressure applied on the projection let will permit the spring 15 to effect the reengagement of the teeth 11 and 7, when the movable j aw becomes locked in position on the handle.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear enough understanding of the in-' vention is to be had to render further desoription unnecessary.
The invention having been described what is claimed as new and useful is:
A neh comprising a stationary formed with a handle, a portion of whose edge above the grip is beveled having a fiat longitudinal portion adjacent one sine and similar portion adjacent the other side, the beveled edge being formed with transversely disposed teeth thereon, a movable j aw slidably mounted on the handle, plates straddling the handle and connected'with the movable jaw and formed with web portions facing the said beveled edge, the said web portions being shaped to effect sliding engagement with both said fiat portions, a block formed with a beveled edge and provided with teeth for engagement with the teeth of tne handle, a pin set in the webs and loosely supporting the block which is disposed between the said webs, and a fiat s'oi mounted on one of the said lat-es and L J, 1 having end bearing upon the block to yieldingly keep the teeth 01": the latter in engagement with the teeth of the handle for the purpose specnied.
