Abstract

1,274,862. Motor-vehicles steering-gear. ADWEST ENG. Ltd. 11 July, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 17733/68. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] The front wheels 2,3 of a vehicle are connected respectively to the opposite ends of a rack 5 mounted on the front axle 1 of the vehicle. The wheels are steered by moving the rack 5 longitudinally in one direction or the other by appropriately turning the steering wheel 15, such that a pinion 14 coupled to its shaft 16 moves a second rack 13 the motion of which is transmitted through a pinion 12 driven by the rack 13, a shaft 9 and a pinion 8 in engagement with the rack 5. The shaft 9 may be jointed by a universal coupling 10 and a sliding joint 11. The front wheels may be independently suspended. The mechanism may be employed in power assisted steering.
