Abstract

1,274,812. Rendering textiles water-repellent. CIBA-GEIGY A.G. 27 Jan., 1970 [29 Jan., 1969], No. 4014/70. Heading D1P. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] An aqueous emulsion for treating textiles to render them water-repellent comprises 10- 40 wt% of solids, which solids comprise (a) 17-86 wt% of a reaction product of a methylolaminotriazine with a C12<SP>+</SP> fatty acid or amide or alcohol, (b) 8-77 wt% of a hydrophobic wax, (c) 0.7-14 wt% of a watersoluble nonionic polyethylene glycol compound containing 6-200 -CH 2 CH 2 O- units and a hydrophobic residue, and (d) 0.4-13 wt% of a colourless metal salt of an alkylbenzenesulphonic acid having at least 8 C atoms in the alkyl group(s), the components (a) + (b) totalling 85-96 wt% and (c) + (d) correspondingly 15-4 wt%. Suitable compounds (a) may be derived from formo-, aceto- or benzo-guanamine or melamine, preferably etherified with a C1-4 alkanol, and preferably have at least 75% of the methylol groups modified, 15-50% of them with the fatty acid compounds; suitable waxes (b) are beeswax and paraffin wax of m.p. 45-70‹C; compounds (c) most preferably contain 20-50 -CH 2 CH 2 O- units and may derive from alcohols, thioalcohols, phenols, thiophenols, amines, carboxylic acids and amides. In Examples hexamethylolmelamine is methylated or butylated, then heated with stearic or myristic acid, or arachyl, behing myristyl or a mixed fatty alcohol, or stearamide, or (Ex. 5) melamine is heated with paraformaldehyde, isobutanol and a palmitic/stearic acid mixture. These products (a) are emulsified in water with (b) beeswax or paraffin 50-52‹C, 60-62‹C or 69-71‹C, and (c) polyoxyethylenated tributylphenol, hydroabietyl alcohol, nonyl phenol, di-t-butyl-pcresol, stearyl or oleyl alcohol, stearyl, hydroabietyl or oleyl amine or a mixed fatty amine, dodecyl mercaptan, oleic acid or oleamide or stearamide having 9-80 -CH 2 CH 2 O- units, and (d) Ca, Ba, Zn, Pb, Mg, Zr, Al, Sn, Ti, Na, K, Li or Cs dodecylbenzenesulphonate or Ca or Na undecylbenzenesulphonate, with curing catalysts Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . 18H 2 O, AlCl 3 . 6H 2 O, NH 4 Cl, ZnCl 2 MgCl 2 . 6H 2 O or H 3 PO 4 . The emulsions are used to impregnate cotton gaberdine fabric, which is then dried and cured.
