Abstract

1,149,298. Thermosetting resin water-proofing compositions. COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORP. 10 May, 1967 [7 June, 1966], No. 21635/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Divisions B2 and Di] A composition for imparting water-repellency to fibrous materials comprises (a) a thermosetting resin binder and (b) an oxazoline where R is C 1-3 alkyl, hydroxymethyl or -CH 2 -OOC-R<SP>2</SP>; R<SP>1</SP> is C 12-22 alkyl; R<SP>2</SP> is C 1-23 alkyl; and X is H 2 or = CH 2 , the weight ratio (a): (b) being from 10: 1 to 1: 10, dispersed in (c) a liquid. Numerous resins (a) are specified including aminoplasts of the urea, melamine, triazone and pyrimidinone series; resins containing aziridinyl groups such as tris (aziridinyl) phosphine oxide or sulphide; dialdehydes; polymeric acetals obtained by condensing aldehydes with alkylene glycols; and epoxy resins. The liquid (c) may be an aqueous emulsion, various emulsifiers being specified, or an organic solvent, e.g. isopropanol. An oxidized polyolefin wax of M.W. at least 750 and Acid No. 2 to 50 may be included with emulsions. Other optional ingredients specified are curing catalysts, softening agents, oil repellants, dyes, pigments, textile lubricants, moth-proofing, flame-proofing, shrink-proofing, mildew-proofing or brightening agents, sizes, wet-strength resins and leather-treating agents. In Examples 1 and 2 various oxazolines are melt blended with oxidized polyethylene wax and a nonyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensate (emulsifier), emulsified with aqueous KOH and blended with trismethoxymethyl melamine, zinc nitrate and more water to give a bath in which cotton sateen cloth is padded. In Example 3 paper is sprayed with a composition of 3 parts oxazoline emulsion, 3 parts tris(aziridinyl)phosphine oxide, 1 part ammonium chloride and 93 parts isopropanol.
