Abstract

1457428 Paper sizing compositions TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc 5 June 1974 [2 July 1973] 31525/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division D2] An aqueous emulsion for sizing paper comprises as the continuous phase an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and sodium lignosulphate, and as the dispersed phase, at least one ketene dimer satisfying the formula wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl or alkynyl of at least 8 carbon atoms; a hydroxy substituted derivative of one of the above groups; an at least C 6 cycloalkyl group; an aryl group; an alkaryl group; or an aralkyl group; and where the groups R may be the same or different. The preferred concentrations for each component are: polyvinyl alcohol-0À5 to 15%; sodium lignosulphate-0À01 to 1À5%; and ketene dimer-1 to 25%; all based on the total weight of the emulsion. A condensate of dicyandiamide and formaldehyde may also be present. The composition may be made by mixing the components in water, subjecting the mixture to high shear homogenization and then cooling rapidly to below 30‹ C. Examples are given in which (i) each R is a C 1-8 alkyl group, and (ii) in which the dimer is a mixed tetradecyl/hexadecyl ketene dimer and (iii) in which each R is octyl, tetracosyl, phenyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, or derived from ricinoleic acid.
