A process for preparing an aqueous emulsion suitable for gluing paper, comprising: forming an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and sodium lignosulfonate; stirring said solution while adding at least one molten ketene dimer thereto to form a crude emulsion, said ketene dimer having the formula (R-CH = C = O) 2 wherein R is an alcohol group, alkenyl, alkadienyl, or alkynyl containing at least 8 carbon atoms; a hydroxy-substituted alcohol, alkenyl, alkadienyl, or alkynyl group containing at least 8 carbon atoms; a cycloalkoxy group containing at least 0 carbon atoms; an aryl group; an alkaryl group; or an aralcohyl group; and where the R groups can be the same or different; homogenize the emulsion by subjecting it to a high shear action; and then quickly cool the homogenized emulsion to a temperature below 30ºC.
