Abstract

1,274,363. Carbonating. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. 6 April, 1970 [28 Aug., 1969], No. 16229/70. Heading B1C. A method of carbonating a liquid comprises introducing the liquid into a chamber 10 until it reaches a predetermined level, admitting CO 2 into the chamber, and mixing the liquid and CO 2 together. The chamber may be provided with a pipe 13 having a two-way valve 16 through which the chamber may be vented to atmosphere when liquid is being introduced or through which CO 2 may be admitted after the desired level has been reached. The valve may be actuated by means of a float switch 25. Mixing may be carried out by means of circulating pump 30 which forces the liquid through pipe 33 and ejects it out of nozzle 34 onto the CO 2 at the top of the chamber. The pump may also be actuated by means of the float switch. The carbonated liquid may be discharged through outlet 48 via mixing valve 44, wherein it may be mixed with syrup. During dispensing of the carbonated liquid, valve 16 may be kept open to CO 2 and the circulating pump may be switched off by means of an appropriate switch. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), separate pipes for venting of air and admission of CO 2 are provided, and mixing is carried out by the entrainment of liquid by entering CO 2 and its discharge onto the surface of the liquid in the chamber.
