[Also in Division Cl] A liquid self-hardening mixture for making foundry cores and moulds comprises a particulate refractory material, a binder in the form of gypsum, water, a foaming agent and salts of lignosulphonic acids and/or thermopolymers thereof. Salts of lignosulphonic acids preferably calcium or ammonium salts and/or thermopolymers thereof may be present in sulphitealcohol distillation refuse, which is obtained from sulphite-cellulose cooking in wood processing. The thermopolymers which may be present in the mixture are concentrates obtained by heat treating salts of lignosulphonic acids. The partioulate refractory material may be quartz sand, or chromium magnesite, whilst the foaming agents may be anionic, cationic or nonionic compounds of which compounds alkylarylsulphonates, alkylsulphonates, or alkylsulphates are particularly preferred. The mixture is mixed to fluidify it prior to use. The amount of the salts of lignosulphonic acids and/or their thermopolymers introduced is preferably 0À1-2 parts by weight. The composition may also include 0À1-1 parts by weight of cement.
