Abstract
1,274,002. Fermenting tea leaf. A. C. K. KRISHNASWAMI and C. HARIPRASAD. 14 July, 1969, No. 35385/69. Heading A2B. In a continuous process for fermenting tea leaves, the leaves are continuously passed through a rotating drum which contains spiralling members and where the leaves are subjected to an air stream of desired humidity and temperature and to gyratory and agitative movement to provide a gentle rubbing action on the leaves and where they are preferably mixed with balls (e.g. of Al or Al alloy) to prevent agglomeration of the leaves. A suitable apparatus comprises a rotary drum D having an inlet p, outlets d, spiralling (e.g. helical) vanes V on its inner surface and an inspection window I having a shutter, means e.g. a pipe (not shown), for introducing air of desired humidity and temperature throughout the length of the drum, and balls (not shown) in the drum. The outlets d have shutters having openings which allow the passage of the leaves but not the balls. The drum D is rotated by driven friction wheels W engaging the tyres T surrounding the drum D, the friction wheels being driven by an electric motor or combustion engine. Bins and conveyors may be mounted at the inlet and outlet ends of the drum for feeding the leaves to and collecting the leaves from the drum. The drum may be inclined to the horizontal; it may have more than one inlet opening; and it may be mounted on a rotatable shaft.
