Food for animals.-Food for cattle and other animals is made by subjecting sphagnum or peat moss or other cellulose or cellulose-containing material in an autoclave or digester to the action of a concentrated hydrolyzing-agent and superheated steam. The hydrolyzing-agent may consist of sulphuric, sulphurous, or hydrochloric acid, or of a mixture of acids, in the form of a concentrated solution' in the gaseous state, and the amount used need not be more than about 5 per cent. of acid calculated on the dry material. With hydrochloric acid, the temperature is maintained at 148‹ C., and with sulphuric or sulphurous acids, at 168‹ C. The use of superheated steam enables these temperatures to be reached at a low pressure, the reaction being complete in about half an hour. The autoclave may be jacketed or lagged, or both, and may be revoluble or invertible or otherwise fitted with means for disturbing the material.
