Abstract

1,273,844. Blasting. VACU-BLAST CORP. 13 Jan., 1970 [31 Jan., 1969], No. 1660/70. Heading B3D. An abrasive blasting system comprises means 40 for providing a constant flow of air at uniform pressure, a conduit 42 connected to the means 40, an intermediate conduit 66 connected to the conduit and having a substantially rectangular cross-section an elongated nozzle 22 having an inlet end fixed to the intermediate conduit section, the nozzle having a constant width and a rectangular cross-section throughout its length the thickness of the nozzle being small in comparison to its width and decreasing from a maximum dimension at its inlet to a minimum dimension at its outlet, and feed means 52 for dispensing abrasive material into the intermediate conduit at a substantially uniform rate along a line extending transversely across the full width of the nozzle near its inlet. The system may be used for treating a moving strip and have upper and lower nozzles 22,24, connected to the intermediate conduits 66, 66a. The latter are connected by sections 64 to adaptors 62 fixed to pipes 52, 54 leading from a feeder pot 50, pressure pot 48 and hopper 36 supplied with abrasive, such as glass beads or steel shot from 10 to 1000 microns in size, delivered from a cyclone separator 34 connected to a ducted floor 32. The intermediate conduits 66, 66a are also connected by adaptors 90 and sections 92 to conduits 42 leading from a low pressure blower 40. The intermediate conduits include valves 68 which are adjustable to control the flow of abrasive to the nozzles, each valve consisting of a pair of flexible members which can be moved towards or away from one another by a piston- and-cylinder device. The nozzles may have an abrupt or gradual taper from their maximum thickness at their inlet ends to their minimum thickness between the inlet and outlet ends, Figs. 2a and 2b. In other embodiments having a single nozzle, the nozzle may be horizontal and oscillatable about an axis transverse to the nozzle by an hydraulic actuator, or the nozzle may be vertical and oscillated about a longitudinal axis by an actuator. The abrasive may be fed to the nozzle by air pressure or gravity.
