Abstract
1,273,672. Strengthening hulls; lubricating hulls. W. H. GERMAN. 2 March, 1970 [28 Feb., 1969], No. 9858/70. Headings B7M and B7S. The cargo carrying portion of a bulk carrier has a box beam 40 defining at least one duct extending along each side at approximately the load water line for strengthening the hull against ice pressure. Strut assemblies 31, 32 extending transversely at longitudinally spaced intervals at the level of the beams interconnect them to resist internal ice pressure against the hull. In the ship described each box beam defines two ducts 41, 42 along which heated water is conveyed thus heating the hull at the water line. Heated water can be discharged down the outside of the hull from bleed boxes 63 and air can be bubbled upwards from orifices 67<SP>1</SP>.
