Abstract

1,273,407. Joint-making packing. E. B. HARBY. 10 Nov., 1969 [13 Nov., 1968], No. 54820/69. Heading F2B. A cylinder head gasket or the part of a gasket which surrounds the combustion space consists of sintered metal. The sinter metal may be iron, steel, brass or copper powder and the pores sealed throughout or locally by an impervious filler during manufacture. The openings in the gasket may be plated with metal and the areas surrounding the openings may be corrugated to increase resilience, the corrugations preferably being in the form of waves extending parallel with the outline of the openings. A gasket may be manufactured of layers of metal and sealing material and with a separate ring inserted around a combustion space opening, the ring being made of sintered metal, having a bulk modulus at least the same as that of the rest of the gasket.
