Abstract
1,261,137. Joint-making packing. F. AUDINET. 11 Dec., 1969 [13 Dec., 1968], No. 60526/69. Heading F2B. A seal between the cylinder block 6 and the cylinder head 5 in an I.C. engine comprises a flat gasket 4 and a metal sealing ring element 2 having a gap 1 1 and a trapezoidal cross-section arranged to co-operate with a seating in the cylinder head or block such that, when the cylinder head is tightened down the ring contracts towards the centre-line of the cylinder, and after the tightening down of the cylinder head upon the flat gasket there remains a clearance at the ring gap in order that as a result of its expansion due to temperature rise it is still able to contract inwards. The upper surface of the ring 2 may be flat instead of conical and the lower conical surface may coact with a conical surface in a cylinder liner instead of the cylinder block 6. The gap 11 is preferably of the overlapping type.
