Abstract
1,272,597. Controlling vehicles. F. A. WALKDEN. 20 March, 1970 [9 Jan., 1969], No. 1279/69. Heading B7H. [Also in Divisions F1 and H1] An engine throttle holding device comprises manually operable means for opening or closing a normally open switch which is in the electric supply circuit of its holding means and a solenoid having two windings, one winding being energized on the closing of the switch to hold the latter closed and the other winding being energized on application of the vehicle brakes to counteract the magnetic field of the first winding to enable the switch to open under the action of biasing means. The throttle is held by an electromagnet clutch 11, Fig. 1, including a stator 10 and a rotor 11 which is mounted for rotation by the throttle against the action of a spiral spring 13 and is free to move axially against spring 14 when coil 15 is energized to clutch the rotor 11 to the stator 10, thereby locking the throttle in the selected position. The coil can be energized or de-energized by depressing buttons 22 or 31, Fig. 2, which act on a rocker bar 23 to close or open a microswitch 21. Closure of the latter energizes with 15 and the circuit through lamp 30 and solenoid 28, which retains the rocker bar 23 in the closed position. In a modification of the control arrangement the push buttons are omitted and the rocker bar is replaced by a translucent bar (37), Fig. 3 (not shown), which has a magnetic armature (38) at one end which is held by the solenoid (28). The translucent bar is illuminated by the lamp (30).
