Abstract

1,272,539. Gas centrifuges. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 2 March, 1970 [3 March, 1969], No. 9940/70. Heading B2P. An ultracentrifuge for separating the constituents of a gas mixture comprises a rotatable cylindrical bowl 1 closed by two parallel ends 3, 4, Fig. 1, a conduit 5 for introducing the gas mixture to be centrifuged into the bowl and extending along the axis of rotation, a plurality of gas withdrawal passages 6 in at least one of the ends 3, 4 of the bowl, the passages communicating with the interior and exterior of the bowl by axially spaced inlet and outlet apertures 6a, 6b respectively in axially spaced inner and outer faces of the bowl, the inlet and outlet apertures lying respectively on circles centred on the axis of rotation and the outlet apertures being displaced angularly in like direction relative to said axis and with respect to their associated inlet apertures. A diffuser 8 is provided adjacent each end of the bowl for recovering the Kinetic energy of the gas streams escaping from the apertures. One or more spiral-shaped ramps 12, Fig. 3, are mounted between the metal sheets 9, 10 forming the diffuser to guide the gas through the diffuser. In a modification, Fig. 4, recovery of Kinetic energy is improved by providing a non-turbulent-gasflow chamber 13 between the end 3 of the bowl and a partition 14 provided with gas passages 15. The end 3 has an annular opening 16 in which blades 17 are mounted at an angle thereby defining between them the gas withdrawal passages.
