Abstract

1,251,167. Centrifugal separators. BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE. 7 Aug., 1970 [8 Aug., 1969], No. 38291/70. Heading B2P. A centrifuge for separating emulsions into two liquid constituents of different densities comprises a rotating drum 1 having an admission chamber 13 for the emulsion to be separated at one end, an outlet chamber 19 for the separated constituents at the other end, and an intermediate portion including a separating zone consisting of longitudinally extending separate passages, e.g. tubes 2, arranged around an axial hub 3 and connecting the chambers 13, 19. The admission chamber 13 has an axial inlet 8 communicating with the ambient atmosphere. The outlet chamber 19 is equipped with at least one outlet 21, Fig. 1 or 31, Fig. 2, for the constituents of lower density communicating with the ambient atmosphere and discharging this constituent at a distance from the axis of rotation 5 of the drum greater than the radius of the inlet 8 and smaller than the radius of the hub 3. The outlet chamber 19 is further equipped with at least one outlet duct 27, 22, Fig. 1, or 27, 32, Fig. 2, for the constituent of higher density communicating with the ambient atmosphere and extending from a peripheral zone of the chamber 19 towards the axis of rotation 5 up to a radial distance equal to or slightly greater than that of the outlet 21 (31). The emulsion to be separated is fed through a fixed pipe 12. Baffles 14, 16 Fig. 1, may be provided upstream of the tubes 2 to deviate the emulsion so as to separate therefrom any solid impurity by centrifugal force before entry into the tubes. The tubes may be inclined to the axis of rotation and they may have a non-circular and/or asymmetrical cross-section to promote coalescence of the emulsified liquid globules. The tubes may be helical instead of rectilinear. Instead of tubes, the passages may be formed by an annular honeycomb structure or by an assembly of spaced corrugated plates. The centrifuge of Fig. 1 may have its axis in any other position than the horizontal.
