Abstract
1,272,221. Straddle carriers. W. R. WATKINSON, J. L. WOODMANSEE, W. STEPIEN, and G. H. ROBINS. 2 July, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 17067/68. Heading B8H. A straddle carrier Fig. 1, has three legs, 2, 3, 4, Fig. 2, and supports a container spreader 6, Fig. 1, which is raised and lowered by cables and an hydraulic ram 73, Fig. 9, and moved laterally by a ram 88. Rams 97 rotate corner couplings 95. The legs are detachable, and are allowed to rotate about pivot pins 24, Fig. 5, as the carrier is dismantled, by a ram 30, cables 34, 38, and sheaves 37, 39. The wheels 40, Fig. 6, may be hydraulically driven and braked and are resiliently mounted on pivot pins 48 by springs 49, 50 which comprise stacks of resilient material and steel washers bonded together. Steering is effected by ring gear 54 and a pinion. A limit switch interrupts the supply of hydraulic liquid to the lifting ram if the spreader tilts more than a predetermined amount. An operators cab 11, Fig. 1, is provided in the leg 3, as one a prime mover 10 and a control unit 99 for the hydraulic circuits.
