Abstract

1,272,133. Coated metal. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 23 Sept., 1970 [23 Sept., 1969], No. 46796/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B3] In a process for cold rolling metal strip or sheet, the lubricant used during rolling is subsequently irradiated to form a protective coating on the metal. In an example, a strip. 2 is coated with lubricant as it passes between the rolls 4 of a cold rolling mill, the lubricant conveniently being sprayed on the rolls. The lubricant is then dried and spread uniformly over the strip by passing the strip through an oven 6. The strip is irradiated, in a vacuum chamber 8 provided with roller seals 14, by means of electron beams, X-rays or gamma rays. The lubricant coating is cross linked or polymerised to form a protective coating on the metal. The lubricant may be a rolling oil, liquid paraffin, palm oil, polyethylene, or dioctyl sebacate. A second coating may be applied to the strip following partial or full irradiation of the initial coating. The second coating, which can be vacuum deposited epoxy resin, can then be similarly irradiated. Alternatively, the second coating can be deposited on the initial coating before irradiation of both coatings.
