Abstract
1,272,040. Spreaders for lifting containers. VICKERS HOSKINS PTY. Ltd. 10 Nov., 1970 [10 Nov., 1969], No. 53378/70. Heading B8H. [Also in Division E2] A cargo container spreader, Fig. 1 (not shown), has a number of downwardly projecting posts 13 for engagement in corresponding recesses in a container the posts being mounted such that they can be displaced to align with a misaligned container recess. Each post has latching means 15 which, when the post is rotated by means of a ram 16, connecting rod 18 and a cranked lever 19 connected to the post 13 co-operate with the recesses. Each post 13 is rotatably mounted in a casing 21 having a bearing surface 22 for engagement with a container. Upward movement of the easing 21 against the action of a spring 28 surrounding the casing results in the post 13 moving to a position where its longitudinal axis can be displaced to allow the post 13 to enter a misaligned recess (R) in a container as shown in Fig. 4 (not shown). Each post 13 has a safety interlock which prevents its rotation when a container is suspended from the spreader, comprising a cam plate 30 and a sensing rod 31 having an enlarged portion 34, which, in a locked condition, engages the plate 30. On dropping the spreader on to a container, the latching means 15 enters the recess, the rod 31 contacts the container and is moved against a spring 32 to move the portion 34 of rod 31 clear of cam plate 30 thus unlocking the post 13 to permit its rotation. When the container is suspended from the spreader the posts 13 are held in the locked condition.
