Abstract

1,271,848. Polyester yarn. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 4 June, 1969 [11 June, 1968], No. 28148/69. Heading D1W. A polyester composite filament yarn comprises a plurality of individual filaments each consisting of polyesters arranged in an eccentric disposition in a side by side arrangement and mutually adhered along the entire length thereof, said yarn having an 'apparent shrinkage' of between 0 and 20% and a 'substantial shrinkage' of less than 3% when said yarn is treated in hot water at a predetermined stretched condition of 5 mg./denier, said individual filaments each having between 10 and 35 crimps per centimetre after treatment in boiling water and a mass density of more than 1.3850. Tests are described for the determination of 'apparent' and 'substantial shrinkage'. In a preferred embodiment, undrawn composite multifilament yarn is drawn whilst heated and then passed to a relaxation zone to impart primary bulk to the yarn. The yarn is then stretched to separate the multifilaments into individual filaments, and then relaxed. The yarn is then passed through a heated relaxation zone to set the crimps obtained. Several examples of suitable polyesters for use in the yarn are given in the Specification.
