A high-bulk, low stretch, composite yarn is produced by modifying the crimp of a textured, synthetic, thermoplastic, multifilament yam to a predetermined, controlled value and plying it, e.g. with 50-200 turns per metre doubling twist, with a carrier yarn of manmade, vegetable, e.g. cotton, or animal, e.g. wool, continuous or staple fibres and of low structural elongation. The required crimp may be developed by partial relaxation, e.g. 20-50%, between pairs of rollers, of the tensioned and/or stretched textured yarn, optionally, with heat applied and/or the crimp modification effected along the plying path. The texturing may have been effected by twist or false-twist crimping, edge drawing, asymmetric heating, differential shrinkage of bifilar components, stuffer-box or intermeshing toothed rollers. The degree of crimp modification may be varied periodically or at irregular time intervals to produce yarns varying in bulk. The wound composite yarn may be stabilised by a heat-treatment and at least two similar such yarns may be plied.
