Abstract

1,051,937. Finishing yarns MONSANTO CO. Nov. 12, 1964 [Nov. 12, 1963], No. 46139/64. Heading D1F. Intermittently textured yarn is produced by underdrawing a thermoplastic continuous filament yarn so that it exhibits alternate thick and thin portions along the length thereof, subjecting the yarn to a texturing operation which may be accompanied by heating or preheating and subsequent cooling of the yarn, and stretching the yarn to complete the draw and so that the thin portions remain textured and the thick portions are untextured or straight. The yarn may be dyed before it is finally stretched so that textured and untextured portions show different shades of colour. The yarn filaments may be of a polyamide (nylon-6 or-66), polyester (polyethylene terephthalate), polyurethane, polyurea, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, or cellulose ester or ether, of circular, X or Y cross-section and/or tubular and/or have discontinuous voids therein. Texturing is by one or more passages of the yarn between toothed crimping wheels or gears, twist or false-twist curling or crimping, compressive crimping in a stuffer-box, knitting the yarn into a fabric which is then heat-set and unravelled, or hot plasticizing fluid-jet looping treatment. The yarn may be heat-relaxed before or after take-up on a package to enhance the crimp &c. and/or it may be stapled. Yarn production, i.e. from the filament-forming apparatus to the final take-up of stretched, textured yarn, or two or more stages thereof, may be continuous.
