Abstract

1,271,703. Making conductors; rolling. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 12 Oct., 1970 [10 Oct., 1969; 19 March, 1970], Nos. 49915/69 and 13271/70. Headings B3A and B3M. [Also in Division H1] A copper-clad aluminium conductor is made by forming copper strip into a tube around an aluminium conductor having an external diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the copper tube formed, reducing the internal diameter of the copper tube by ring rolling and subjecting the conductor so formed to a further reduction so as to form an intimate solid-phase bond between the copper and aluminium. Aluminium strip is fed from spool 13, through guide and edge shear rolls 15 and then, after scratch brushing, through forming rolls 16 which bend the strip into a tube 32 whose edges are welded at head 23. Prior to the edges being welded core conductors 33 together with magnesium oxide powder are introduced into the tube. The welded aluminium tube 32 is passed through a ring roll 19 which reduces the tube and compresses the magnesium oxide powder within it, to form an aluminium-sheathed powder insulated cable 34. A copper strip 25 is passed through edge shearing rolls 26 and then, together with the cable 34, passed through a scratch brush. The copper strip is formed into a tube around the cable 34 by rolls 27 and welded at head 28. The copper-sheathed cable 36 is reduced by a ring roll 29 and finally the cable 36 is passed through a die 31 for effecting a solidphase bonding of the copper cladding to the aluminium sheath. Instead of passing the cable through a die 31 it may be rolled into strip form.
