Abstract

1,120,319. Extruding cable sheaths; making electric cables. SIMPLEX WIRE & CABLE CO. 15 Dec., 1965 [15 Dec., 1964], No. 53246/65 Headings B3A and B3P. [Also in Division H1] An electric cable having a core 40 composed of alkali or alkaline earth metals or their alloys, is made by extruding a sheath 28<SP>1</SP> and filling it with molten core metal. For forming the sheath, hot extrusion metal is forced from passage 20 into chamber 22 from which it is extruded through the gap between die 16 and mandrel 18. The sheath is cooled at 30 by circulated water or by water jets. Molten alkali or alkaline earth metal is introduced into the sheath 28<SP>1</SP> through pipe 32. An inert gas is also introduced into the sheath through duct 36. For strengthening the cable a solid or stranded steel rope 44 may pass through the centre of the core. This rope is omitted in the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2 (not shown). The cable passes through a drawing die 42 to form it into oval cross-section, Fig. 4 (not shown), or the sheath may be corrugated. Examples are given of the extrusion temperatures and pressure used for aluminium sheaths. References are also made to sheaths of copper and lead. The core metal may be sodium, lithium, calcium or their alloys, including alloys of calcium/lithium, sodium/ potassium, sodium/lithium, lithium/sodium/ potassium, and calcium/lithium/sodium.
