Abstract

1438349 Conductor assembly POST OFFICE 12 Sept 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 43105/73 Heading H1A A conductor assembly for a cable comprising a stranded steel core surrounded by a copper skin, some, at least of the strands in the outer layer of the core being copper clad. The skin may be welded to the core by pressure alone (cold pressure welding) or by pressure with the addition of heating. The copper skin may be formed from tape which is longitudinally applied around the strands and then seam welded or it may be formed by hydrostatic or hydroflow extrusion processes eliminating the need for the seam weld. The copper skin may be microwave annealed after welding to the strands to increase the conductivity without harming the weld. The conductor has applications in submarine telephone cables.
