Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A tool is driven by an A.C. series motor producing full load torque when operating above the normal working speed. The speed may be stabilized by a centrifugal governor, or a tachometer generator associated with a thyristor. Alternatively, a resistor having an inverse voltage-characteristic is connected in series or in parallel with the motor armature. A safety device comprises a switch responsive to the pressure of the cooling air-stream for switching- off the motor when the speed becomes excessive. The centrifugal governor may have an additional pair of contacts acting as a switch-off device, or a vane-type governor may cause rapid braking in the event of excessive speed. In other embodiments, a safety relay responds to changing current distribution between field and armature, or to the voltage developed by a generator.
