In an arrangement for braking the rotor 10 of an A.C. squirrel-cage induction motor by producing an effective direct current in the motor field winding(s), a pair of diodes D 1 , D 2 are connected in series opposing relationship for the or each field winding 12, one diode D 1 being arranged in series and the other diode D 2 in parallel with the associated field winding. For a single-phase motor, the auxiliary winding 15 is connected in parallel with the field winding 12 during braking by a switch 16. The braking effect is controlled by a variable resistor 18 connected between the junction point of diodes D 1 , D 2 , and winding 12 via a switch 17 coupled with the switch 16. The field windings of a three-phase delta or star-connected motor are provided with pairs of diodes, switches 17a, 17b, 17c and variable resistors 18a, 18b, 18c connected in a manner similar to that for a single field winding, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown).
