Abstract

1,270,169. Rolling machines. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE. 23 July, 1969 [23 July, 1968], No. 36950/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions B3 and D2] A rolling mill or calender is provided with a working roll 2 which is pressed against a workpiece 1 by a liquid 4, the liquid being frozen by cooling ducts 10a-10c in order to prevent the leakage of liquid between the roll and supporting walls 7a. The workpiece 1 passes between the roll 2, which is relatively flexible, and a larger roll 3 which is relatively rigid. The arrangement of the cooling ducts and the shape of the liquid containing chamber can be modified to vary the distribution of frozen liquid. Thus, it is possible to freeze the whole chamber, the top portion only, or the two corners between the roll and the walls 7a. The ends of the roll, Fig. 3, may be provided with journals or may bear against cooled end plates 7c and 7d. The liquid 4 is preferably water, and the cooling fluid passing through .the ducts 10a-10c dichlorodifluoromethane.
