Abstract

875,140. Pelleting synthetic resins. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. May 13, 1960 [May 16, 1959], No. 16964/60. Class 87(2). A process for pelleting synthetic resin comprises supplying the material in a liquid state on to a moving endless belt 1, gradually cooling the material on the belt to convert it to a semi-solid state, impressing intersecting grooves on the material by means of a roller 18, the grooves having a depth less than the thickness of the material, cooling the material until it is hard and finally breaking the material at the grooves to form pellets. The material is forced by a pressure from a steam heated container 11 through a filter 13 and adjustable nozzle 15 on to the belt 1 and is progressively cooled on the belt by water sprays 5-8 acting on the underside of the belt and by a counter flow of air through a chamber 10. The roller 18 is adjustable for depth of indentation and also longitudinally to impress where the material has the correct texture. The belt may be of steel and is supported under the roller 18. The material may be broken by a disintegrator 25 which may be a pair of rollers. The belt 1 may have raised side portions to contain the material, Fig. 4 (not shown).
