Abstract

Apparatus for mixing, grinding and dispersing has a tapered pan 2 and at least three polished, rough or fluted tapered rolls 6, 7, 8 each of which mates with two other rolls or with one roll and the side wall of the pan. The rolls are carried in a yoke 5 and the pan and yoke are relatively rotatable; as shown, the pan rotates on a turntable 3. Both rolls and pan (or yoke) may be driven as shown, or one may be driven and the other rotate idly. The yoke and rolls may be raised by a hydraulic jack 9, 10; an adjustable abutment (52, see Fig. 5 not shown) enables the nip or loading between the rolls and pan sidewalls to be varied and the rolls are vertically adjustable (see Fig. 4, not shown) to vary the nip between them. The shafts and rolls are hollow for circulation of a heat exchange medium. Scrapers may be provided. The preferred taper angle is 12‹-18‹ and the rolls will move at the same linear speed only on a single contact line, slip, and shearing of the material, occurring elsewhere. If there be more rolls than three they may be spaced round the central roll, see Fig. 6 (not shown); other numbers than three (e.g. seven) could be arranged diametrically. In a modification for continuous treatment the rolls 60, 61, 62, Fig. 7 are arranged horizontally in a closed container 59 with inlet and outlet shoots (78, 79, Fig. 8 not shown) in opposite ends.
