Abstract
1,270,071. Making combustible gas. LUMMUS CO. 8 May, 1970 [8 May, 1969], No. 22287/70. Heading C5E. Hydrocarbons are steam reformed to produce effluents containing CO and H 2 in total concentration of at least 80 mole per cent by feeding the heated hydrocarbon to at least two reformer zones in parallel, wherein also the effluent from one zone is mixed at at least 1200‹ F. with the hydrocarbon feed of the immediately subsequent zone, the final reformed product being removed from the last zone, and where the steam/carbon mole ratio for the first zone is at least 2:1, and where the total steam/carbon mole ratio based on the total hydrocarbon feed is less than 2:1. The hydrocarbon feed enters the convector heating sections 15, 21 of the reformer and thence to the catalyst tubes 17, 25 in the radiant heating section 18, 26. In the preferred embodiment (2 zones) the mixture temperature is between 1300-1500‹ F. and the overall steam/carbon mole ratio is from 1À1:1 to 1.9:1 and for the first zone from 2.0:1 to 4À0:1. The effluent from the first zone is between 1350‹ F. and 1700‹ F., and the hydrocarbon portion of the second zone is preheated to 300‹-800‹ F. Steam may be introduced at several zones or all at the first zone. Suitable feedstocks are methane, propane, naphtha, liquid natural gas.
