Abstract

In a process of steam-reforming liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons of the kind reformed in Specification 1,032,751, the following conditions are observed: in a primary (endothermic) reforming step with a catalyst the temperature is at least 650 DEG C. and the liquid space velocity at least 0.5 per hour; in a secondary (exothermic) catalytic reforming step the temperature is in the range 450 DEG to 750 DEG C. (preferably 500 DEG to 680 DEG C.) at a pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g. The temperatures and pressures for the secondary step, and the steam ratio, are selected in accordance with plant and catalyst dimensions and space velocity to give a product gas having an equivalent methane content (i.e. that quantity of methan having the same c.v. as that of the hydrocarbons present in the gas) of at least 20% by volume, and the space velocities of both steps, and the dimensions of the secondary reformer, are such that non-methane hydrocarbon entering the secondary reformer is reformed to at least 95% by volume. "Non-conversion" and "liquid space velocity" are defined for normally liquid and normally gaseous hydrocarbons. Pressure up to 600 p.s.i.g. and space velocities up 1.3 per hour are mentioned in the secondary reformer, and steam ratios ranging from 1.3 to 5.5, depending, inter alia, on the catalyst, which may be of the kind described in Specification 1,032,751. Further hydrocarbon may be added to the gases leaving the primary reformer, and a cooling stage, e.g. by heat exchanger, may be interposed between the two reformers, or product gas may be recycled after suitable temperature adjustment to the secondary reformer which may comprise several stages. Alternatively, the secondary reformer catalyst may be cooled indirectly and the heated coolant used to heat the primary reformer. The product gas may be modified or enriched as described in Specification 1,032,751. Five specific examples are described.
