[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A catalyst system for use in dimerizing/ polymerizing ethylene comprises (a) an aluminium compound having the formula HXAl(NR 1 R 2 ) wherein X is a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, for example a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, and R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, each is a hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, (b) a titanium compound having the formula Ti(OR) 4 wherein each R is a hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and (c) optionally a solvent selected from aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Exemplified aluminium compounds (a) are H 2 AlN(CH 3 ) 2 , H 2 AlN(C 2 H 5 ) 2, H 2 AlN (i-C 3 H 7 ) 2 , H 2 AlN(n-C 4 H 9 ) 2, HClAlN(CH 3 ) 2 , HBrAlN(C 2 H 5 ) 2 and HClAlN(n-C 4 H 9 ) 2 ; exemplified titanium compounds (b) are titanium tetraethylate, titanium tetraisopropylate, titanium tetra-n-butylate and titanium tetrahexylate. Exemplified catalyst systems comprise toluene, titanium tetraisopropylate and either H 2 AlN(CH 3 ) 2 (Examples 1 to 5) or H 2 AlN(n-C 4 H 9 ) 2 (Example 2) or HClAlN (n-C 4 H 3 ) 2 (Example3) and toluene, titanium tetra-n-butylate and H 2 AlN(CH 3 ) 2 (Example 4); comparative catalyst systems comprise toluene, titanium tetraisopropylate and either (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlN(CH 3 ) 2 or (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlN(n-C 4 H 9 ) 2 .
