Abstract

1,128,724. Polymerization catalysts for olefins. MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 26 May, 1967 [30 May, 1966; 27 March, 1967], No. 24710/67. Heading C3P. A polymerization catalyst system comprises (1) an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups I, II and III of the Periodic Table of Elements; (2) a halide of a transition metal of Groups IV, V and VI of the Periodic Table; and (3) an aromatic compound of the general formula where X, Y and Z represent hydrogen, halegon, a C1 to 5 aliphatic residue, phenyl, tolyl, alkoxy, amino, nitro, and wherein R<SP>1</SP> represents hydrogen, a C 1-8 aliphatic residue, phenyl or tolyl, and R is a group selected from -OR<SP>2</SP>, -NR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>, and -SR<SP>5</SP> (wherein R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> represent hydrogen, a C 1-5 aliphatic residue, phenyl or tolyl, and R<SP>5</SP> represents a C 1-8 aliphatic residue, phenyl or tolyl), and aliphatic residues containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms. Compound (3) is selected from benzoates, substituted benzoates, alkyl and alkylene phenyl ketones, aromatic amides, and aromatic thiol esters. A large number of these compounds are specified and exemplified. The catalyst is used for polymerizing mono-olefins. Specified mono-olefins are ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, 4 - methyl - 1 - pentene, 1 - hexene, styrene, and mixtures e.g. propylene/ethylene, propylene/butene, propylene/styrene, and propylene/4 - methyl - 1 - pentene. The polymerization is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The polymers are recovered by conventional techniques and the product fractionated by solvent extraction.
