1277629 Amorphous unsaturated copolymers MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 24 Dec 1969 [31 Dec 1968] 62974/69 Heading C3P Linear, unsaturated, substantially amorphous, high molecular weight copolymers containing ethylene units, at least 20% by weight of other alpha-olefin units, and at least 0À5% by weight of butadiene units, in which the butadiene units show a 1,4-trans configuration, and which are soluble in n-heptane or toluene at 25‹ C. may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of an aromatic solvent and a catalytic system comprising a vanadium compound soluble in hydrocarbons, a dialkylaluminium monohalide and an aluminium compound containing halogen wherein the ratio between halogen atoms and aluminium atoms is higher than 1. In the examples copolymers of ethylene, propylene and butadiene are prepared by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of toluene using the following catalyst compositions: (1) Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl, Al(C 2 H 5 )Cl 2 and vanadium triacetylacetonate; (2) Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl, Al 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl 3 , and vanadium triacetyl acetonate or vanadium triethylacetonate; (3) Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl, Al 2 (isoC 4 H 9 ) 3 Cl 3 and vanadium triacetylacetonate; (4) Al(isoC 4 H 9 ) 2 Cl, Al(isoC 4 H 9 )Cl 2 and vanadium triacetylacetonate; (5) Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl, Al 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl 3 and vanadium triacetyl acetonate in the presence of water; and (6) Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl, Al 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl 3 and vanadyl bis-(acetylacetonate).
