Abstract

1,269,447. Suction and scouring apparatus. BENDIX CORP. 27 Aug., 1970, No. 41335/70. Heading E1F. Apparatus for mining material from the bottom of a body of water comprises a mining head 22 including a plate member 24 having an upwardly tapered central passage 32 which cooperates with a bell-shaped member 34 to define an annular passageway 36, a plurality of downwardly-directed nozzles 28 leading from a manifold 26 supplied by a pump 40 through a hose 38 with a fluid, e.g. sea-water, a pipe 52 leading via a hose 50 and a pump 46 from the mining head to a reservoir, and a crane having a cable 20 supporting the mining head, the cable including a resilient link 62 permitting relative vertical movement between the crane and the mining head. Rods 30 on the member 24 provide a screen for material entering the passageway 36. The hose 50 is supported by buoys 58, and the cable 20 extends round a pulley 18 attached by a spring 16 to the crane which is carried on a ship 10.
