Abstract

1,269,280. Side-chain alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons. BP CHEMICALS Ltd. 30 June, 1970 [5 Aug., 1969], No. 39138/69. Heading C5E. Aromatic hydrocarbons containing a side chain in which a hydrogen atom is bonded to a carbon atom alpha to the nucleus are alkylated in the side chain with a mono-olefin in the presence of a catalyst prepared by dispersing Na and/or Li on an anhydrous potassium compound. Suitable aromatic starting materials are toluene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, butylbenzenes, xylenes, mesitylene, p-cymene and alkyl naphthalenes. The mono-olefin may be ethylene, propylene butenes or pentenes. The potassium compound may be a silicate, sulphate, halide or carbonate, and the catalyst may be hydridel before use. The alkylation may be effected at 50-600‹ C. and up to 4000 p.s.i.g. Examples describe the alkylation of toluene with propylene to give irobutylbenzene and of ethyl-benzene with propylene to give 2 methyl-3-phenylbutane using a Na/K 2 CO 3 catalyst.
