Abstract

1,216,277. Heptenes. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 15 April, 1969 [17 May, 1968], No. 23566/68. Heading C5E. Heptenes are produced by co-dimerizing ethylene and propylene to form pentenes, and then co-dimerizing the so-formed pentenes with ethylene, the catalyst in both stages being Na and/or Li dispersed on an anhydrous potassium compound, particularly K 2 CO 3 . The reactions may be performed in two separate stages, or a one-stage process achieved by recycling the pentenes over the first-stage catalyst. The catalyst may be hydrided, and may be activated before use by contact with an olefin capable of metallation. The feed to the process may contain hydrogen; alternatively the feed may be intermittently discontinued while the catalyst is contacted with hydrogen.
