Abstract
1,259,535. Side chain alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons. BP CHEMICALS Ltd. 25 June, 1970 [5 Aug., 1969], No. 39139/69. Heading C5E. An aromatic hydrocarbon having a side-chain containing a hydrogen atom or a carbon atom alpha to the nucleus is alkylated in the sidechain by reaction with an olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal or alkali metal hydride on alumina. Suitable feedstocks are C 1 -C 4 monoalkyl benzenes, xylenes, mesitylene, p-cymene and alkylnaphthalenes. The reaction may be effected at 50‹ to 600‹ C: and up to 4000 p.s.i.g., optionally in a hydrocarbon solvent. The reaction of toluene with propylene to give isobutylbenzene is exemplified and the reactions of toluene and ethylene to give npropylbenzene and of ethylbenzene and propylene to give 2-methyl-3-phenylbutane are specifically mentioned.
