Abstract
1455179 Cumene; sec-butylbenzene UNION CARBIDE CORP 18 April 1974 16927/74 Heading C5E Producing cumene, containing no more than 175 p.p.m. n-propylbenzene, and/or secondary butylbenzene, containing no more than 5000 p.p.m. isobutylbenzene, by alkylating benzene with propylene and/or n-butene using a preformed liquid aluminium chloride alkylation catalyst complex wherein the concentration of AlCl 3 in the reaction mixture is 0À05-0À25 wt. per cent based on the weight of the reaction mixture. Transalkylation of dialkylbenzenes occurs during the reaction. A suitable preformed catalyst complex comprises 0À3-12 moles benzene, 0À7-25 moles diisopropylbenzene or disecbutylbenzene and 0À5-0À7 moles HCl.
