Abstract

1,269,248. Centrifugal casting processes. CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES. 13 Nov., 1969 [15 Nov., 1968], No. 55543/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] Pig iron samples are prepared by tapping the melt directly from a furnace into a centrifuge and centrifuging the iron until it is solid. Melt is poured into a centrifuge tube 1 at 2 and forced on to end blocks 5, 6 of the tube 1 which rotates about an axis 18 at 2500 to 3000 r.p.m. An asbestos liner 19 is provided with tapered ends 22, 23 which brake the jet of molten metal impinging on the end blocks 5, 6. The end blocks 5, 6 are held in place by plates (7, 8, not shown) bolted to cradles (15, 16) midway along and by each side of the tube 1. The end blocks are removed with a covering of solid pig iron, the samples are polished and subjected to spectral analysis.
