Abstract

When casting pipe centrifugally and continuously in an annular mould cavity, the inner surface is cooled more intensively than the outer surface so that the skin forms first at the inner surface of the metal. The solidification front J is as shown in Fig. 8 between the mould A and the core B. The mould and core assembly A, B is mounted for rotation on rollers 13, 14. Molten metal is supplied under a constant head through an inlet passage 21 and is forced centrifugally through radial passages 22, 23, into the mould cavity 12, which is initially closed by a starting ring 27. A member 25 forming the base of the mould cavity has a bevel 26 which directs the melt axially. The mould A is cooled by sprays 44 while the core is cooled internally by coolant flowing from a chamber 30, through an internal conduit 38 and back through the core to discharge chamber 29. The mould and core are tapered outwardly and inwardly respectively, Fig. 4, so as to assist extraction.
