Abstract

1,268,768. Transformers. SOUTH WALES SWITCHGEAR Ltd. 9 July, 1969 [18 July, 1968], No. 34317/68. Heading HIT. The housing 1 of a transformer tank follows generally the shape of the transformer(s) 2 within it, and its outside wall is provided with longitudinal fins 4 of such a cross-section (e.g. T-shaped) that they partially enclose air passages 9 for cooling. The fins 4 may be attached to T-shaped ridges 3 on the housing wall 1, or may be integral with it. Closure strips 10 between adjacent flanges may provide a closed duct for cables. The housing can be a length of an extruded tube of Al or reinforced plastics; and the fins, which may be attached by thermally conductive cement, may also be extruded Al. Below the level of the fins, the transformer tank is provided with an Al base-plate (11, Fig. 4, not shown), and this portion may be buried. Above the transformer and oil may be a closure member (12), above which are meters (14) for the output cables and a plug (15) for the input voltage connection, both these being covered by a hinged lid (13).
