[Also in Division A4] An apparatus for cutting, mincing and melting fat comprises a casing 1 having an inlet pipe 19 for steam and an outlet 20 for the molten fat; a rotatable drum 2 inside the casing having a perforated cylindrical portion (15) and a tapering portion (16) Fig. 5, (not shown), and into which raw fat stock can be fed via a hopper (6) Fig. 1, (not shown); knives 7 rotatable with the drum; and stationary L- shaped knives 8 each of which has two cutting edges, one of which (9) is so directed as to engage the rotating fat and the other edge (10) Fig. 4, (not shown) is held at an adjustable distance from the inner cylindrical wall of the drum 2, the cutting edges being on the ends of the L-shape with the cutting edge which engages the rotating fat on the longer limb and the other limb directed towards the inner surface of the drum. Raw fat fed into the drum is evenly distributed and preliminarily cut up by the knives 7 which are vertically upstanding from a plate mounted parallel to the base of the drum and is further cut up by the cutting edges (9) of knives 8, and is then forced to the cylindrical wall by centrifugal force, held in the perforations and trimmed by the cutting edges (10) of knives 8. The resulting small pieces of fat pass into the space between the drum 2 and casing 1, are melted by the steam and the molten fat is removed via outlet 20 by the action of vanes 18. A suitable device is illustrated in Fig. 4, (not shown) for adjusting the position of knives 8 by means of a threaded pin passing through a bush attached to the casing, and a nut screwed onto the pin and the bush.
