Abstract

A water cooled lance 9 extending into a furnace, e.g. of the Kaldo type, through a sleeve 8 in a furnace hood 1 is supported by an arrangement which facilitates changing of the lance when required, and allows the inclination and penetration of the lance with respect to the furnace to be varied, either separately or simultaneously. As shown, the lance 9 is strapped at 14 to a carriage 13 which moves on a support member comprising a guide track 16 and bearing plates 17. The support member, which pivots about a horizontal shaft 18, has its inclination varied via a motor driven toothed sector and worm 19. Movement of the lance into and out of the furnace is effected by means of a rack and pinion drive 20; stops 21, 22 limit the movement of the carriage. For changing the lance the hood is pivoted at 4 from an operative position to an inoperative position and the guide rail 16 is orientated to be contiguous and in alignment with a stationary rolling track 24. A winch 27 and cable 28 moves the lance and carriage up the track 24 clear of the hood which is then pivoted to be in alignment with a second similar stationary rolling track (24<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2) carrying a new lance strapped to its carriage. An overhead travelling crane 30 lifts the carriage of the lance. The dismounting and mounting of the flexible pipes 10a for the gas and cooling water is effected by means of a monorail system 32 fixed below the upper floor 26 of the steelworks.
