Abstract

921,645. Converter blast supply. KOPPERS CO. Inc. May 2, 1961 [Oct. 11, 1960], No 15842/61. Class 72. An apparatus for supporting at least one lance which introduces a fluid consisting of or including oxygen into a converter comprises an elevated support, such as steel columns 47 and 51, elongated guide means, such as guide tracks 33, providing a vertical path of movement for at least one lance 17 and being movably attached, e.g. by struts 39 and 41 pivoting on brackets 42 and 43 mounted on the column 47, to the support, a lifting mechanism, such as a hoist drum 57 driven by motors 54 and 56 supported on a plate 53, which is mounted on the guide means, and a guide carriage 18 to which the lance or lances are rigidly clamped and which vertically reciprocates on the tracks 33, e.g. by means of flanged wheels 34 and 36, being activated by the lifting mechanism. The apparatus may also be suitable for an openhearth furnace. A converter illustrated has an outer shell 12 with a refractory lining 13 composed of magnesia lined with tar-bonded burnt dolomite magnesia bricks 14.
