Abstract

1,267,465. Bonding metal to silicon. ITT INDUSTRIES Inc. 22 Oct., 1970 [28 Oct., 1969], No. 50126/70. Heading B3V. [Also in Divisions C1 and H1] Silicon strain gauges 12, 14, are bonded on to opposite sides of a beam 10 by layers of glass 13, 15, the glass layers having a thickness of less than 0À002 inch. The beam is of nickel-steel alloy. The bonding process comprises pressing the silicon strain gauge under pressure on to the beam with a sheet of glass interposed, heating the whole to above 700‹ F. to render the glass conductive and then applying a positive D.C. potential of over 200 v. to the strain gauge with respect to the glass sheet to pass a current to fuse them and afterwards applying the potential between the beam and the glass sheet to pass a current to fuse them similarly, the beam being positive with respect to the glass.
